Fred Andersen's New Shop

By: Brock de Lappe
Posted: November 9, 2010

Despite a dreary rainy day, spirits were high Saturday, October 23rd, at the Open House of Fred Andersen’s new shop in Richmond.  Fred’s previous business had been located at Alameda Point on the west end of Alameda.  His new shop, at 616 West Cutting Blvd in the KKMI Boatyard in Richmond, is in a great location, with great docks, and yard facilities. And as owners of historic wooden sailboats will attest, the availability of the increasingly rare skilled woodworkers that maintain and restore our fleet of wooden Knarrs, IODs and Folkboats is also a blessing. Without such skilled expertise, boats that might otherwise fall into complete disrepair can be rejuvenated for many more years of sailing on the Bay.

A prime example is the Folkboat USA-22, which had undergone extensive renovations by Fred a few years ago, including new teak decks.  She was recently sold and is currently in the yard at Fred’s shop for some maintenance and a bottom job for the new owners.

Also hauled out in the yard is Knarr USA-125 which is undergoing a complete restoration to be in shape to race again in this highly competitive class.

Fred and Hilary

Whenever there is food and drink and a good reason get together, Folkboaters will never fail to appear.

Folkboaters present included Jim Fraser, Judy Walsh-Langkammerer, Jim Bryan, Tom Reed & Lee Ann Chernack, Evie Ashcroft & David Thompson, Bill DuMoulin, Terri Watson and Kimi Harrison, Michael & Dora Weber, Faith Weber & Brock de Lappe.  Fred and Hilary provided a great spread of food and drink.

Perched in a loft above the main floor, Fred has a cozy and organized office with his collection of books and a shelf full of woodworking planes.  What’s not to like about this?  An essential resource for our sailing fleets has settled in to a new home.
